Florida State College at Jacksonville

TEAM PROJECT: A CASE STUDY MAN4301 HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Florida State College at Jacksonville OVERVIEW You are the senior human resource professional in a company and part of the senior strategic management team. The company is a service company that operates five teleprofit centers of 300 representatives each in the following Florida cities: Jacksonville, Orlando, Gainesville, Tampa, and Miami. The CEO has asked the senior strategic team to develop a HR plan that will allow the company to grow by two more teleprofit centers, which will be located in Jacksonville, Florida. Considering turnover, length of training, hiring success and learning curve for new employeesdevelop a reasonable “hire ahead” plan, which keeps newly trained employees ready to take the place of employees who leave or are promoted to other positions. The “hire ahead” plan must allow no more than 3% of the employee base in each of the new teleprofit centers to consist of newly trained employees. The following factors should be considered while developing the plan: • There is a human resource budget of $3.5M. • From the HR Budget, $200K will be dedicated for recruiting and selection. • Recruiting costs will increase by 30%, but the HR budget will not increase. • Recruiting will be conducted through Monster, CareerBuilder, Sologig, and in various print publications in the listed cities. • There will be 4500 applications received per month from the recruiting efforts. • Average turnover of the teleprofit representatives in the company is 7% per month. • Average turnover of the teleprofit representatives in Jacksonville is 5% per month. • New representatives receive two weeks of training in the classroom and two weeks of “side-by-side” training before they are on their own. • All trainer positions are exempt. • It takes nine months for a representative to be considered “fully trained”. SELECTION PROCESS Choose as many, or as few, of the following steps to create the selection process that applies best to your plan. All applicants who pass these steps will be hired. o Pre-screening- performed by a human resource assistant (nonexempt position) – cost of $20 per applicant; 95% of applicants prescreened are successful and are passed on to a recruiter. o Interviewing- completed by a recruiter (exempt position) – cost of $70 per applicant; 50% of applicants who are interviewed are successful and are then tested. o Employee testing- administered by a human resource assistant- cost of $30 per applicant; 50% of those tested are successful and will have a drug screening check done. o Drug screening- coordinated by a human resource assistant- cost of $35 per applicant; 95% will have a successful drug screening and then have a background check completed. o Background check- coordinated by a human resource assistant using a third party contracted provider- cost of $25 per applicant; 60% will have a successful background check and will be submitted to a credit check. o Credit check- conducted by a human resource assistant-cost of $35 per applicant; 60% will fail the credit check. ISSUES TO ADDRESS The following list represents a minimum guideline of issues that should be addressed:  How does this current hiring process affect the successful filling of current position vacancies?  What process changes can be made to help your budget concerns?  How many new employees have to be hired each month to meet the objectives of the “hire ahead” plan?  What is happening to the vacancy rate?  What is the vacancy rate?  What can be done to improve your vacancy rate?  What can be done to understand the turnover rate?  What can be done to improve the turnover rate?  How does this scenario affect the bottom line of the company? TEAM ROLES Each team member will assume one of the following roles (for teams with more than 4 members, there will be multiple researchers).  Team Leader: The Team Leader will be responsible for organizing and coordinating the team, assisting with the gathering of research, verifying that the presentation is reviewed and approved by all team members prior to submission, and submitting the presentation by the deadline.  Researcher: The Researcher will be responsible for gathering the research obtained from all team members, combining all research with proper references into one document, and submitting all materials to the Designer for assembly into the presentation.  Editor: The Editor will be responsible for assisting with the research gathering, ensuring the presentation has been proofed and is error free, that APA style has been followed, and that the work is submitted to the Team Leader in a timely manner.  Designer: The Designer will be responsible for assisting in the gathering of research, assembling the presentation into an organized and engaging presentation and ensuring that the presentation is submitted to the Editor in a timely manner. If the instructor determines that a member of the team fails to participate and contribute as a valuable member of the team, the individual’s grade for the team project will be adjusted accordingly.

The Homeland Security Act of 2002.

Discussion 1: Prior to preparing your discussion post, complete the assigned readings and review the assigned websites for Week One. Review the Martin (2015) text’s examination of the following as set forth in Chapter 1:

The USA PATRIOT Act of 2001; Executive Order 13228 “Establishing the Office of Homeland Security and the Homeland Security Council;” The Homeland Security Act of 2002. Quadrennial Homeland Security Review Report: A Strategic Framework for Securing the Homeland (QHSR published in 2010) Review Steiner’s (2015) discussion of federal, state and local governmental functions within the context of Homeland Security objectives set forth in Chapter 1 of the Steiner (2015) text. As noted by Martin (2015), the Department of Homeland Security (DSH) incorporates a conceptual summary of Homeland Security imperatives, within its Quadrennial Homeland Security Review Report: A Strategic Framework for Securing the Homeland (QHSR). The QHSR sets forth five missions, each of which are complemented with associated goals, which Martin (2015) notes, was published in 2010. The readings in the assigned texts provide information on agencies at the federal, state and local levels that coordinate and contribute to homeland security objectives.

For your initial post, define homeland security. Your definition should include supporting examples. Identify and address at least one potential limitation with your proposed definition. Review the QHSR, select one of the designated missions, and explain how it informs on responsibilities and functions across agencies at various jurisdictional levels that mitigate hostilities, threats, hazards, and consequences. Next, evaluate the merits and concerns of the legal and ethical issues that you identified in your introductory post. Finally, take a position on whether or not the authority and scope of homeland security should be expanded by federalizing state and local emergency response. As a reminder, be sure to incorporate citations when appropriate.

The content of the initial post must contain a minimum of two references to the assigned weekly reading materials. No quotations are permitted. Your posts should incorporate analytical and evidence-based statements and reflect a synthesis of the assigned readings. Your initial post should be a minimum of 400 words FOR DISCUSSION 1.

Discussion 2: It is important to understand the relationship between theory and policy. Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Martin’s (2015) discussion on Organizational Theory (Chapter 5). Examine the following theoretical frameworks: Cold War Terrorist Networking Theory (Chapter 7, Martin 2015), Netwar: A New Organizational Theory (Chapter 7, Martin 2015) and Contagion Theory (Chapter 9, Martin 2015). You may utilize alternative scholarly sources to research each of these theories. To find further information on these theories you can run a search for an individual theory through the Ashford University Library.

It is also important to be able to differentiate deductive and inductive research and to understand how both forms are utilized by scholars to advance knowledge in the area of homeland security. It may be that you are unfamiliar with either or both of these terms. Consult the Purdue Online Writing Lab’s Using Rhetorical Strategies for Persuasionwebpage which presents brief descriptions of deductive and inductive approaches.

Martin (2015) differentiates homeland security policy alternatives across several dimensions, which include but are not limited to security and intelligence dimensions. Martin (2015) indicates that the strategic objective for intelligence associates with its predictive application, whereas security emphasizes deterrence.

This discussion consists of two distinct but related prompts. First, differentiate the following theoretical frameworks: Organizational theory, Cold War Terrorist Networking Theory, Netwar: A New Organizational Theory and Contagion Theory. Second, compare and contrast skills that are needed to identify, evaluate, and resolve complex intelligence policy issues with those that are needed to resolve complex security policy issues. You may wish to consult Table 1.1 in the Martin (2015) text for this purpose. Third, Martin (2015) discusses the context within which homeland security theory developed. Select one of the above theories, and explain how it contributes to the development of policy with particular attention on security and intelligence considerations. As a reminder, please incorporate citations when appropriate.

The content of the initial post must contain a minimum of two references to the assigned weekly reading materials. No quotations are permitted. Your posts should incorporate analytical and evidence-based statements and reflect a synthesis of the assigned readings. Your initial post should be a minimum of 350 words FOR DISCUSSION 2.

Describe the ways in which your company is committed to being a good corporate citizen.

Due Week 8 and worth 30 points

This assignment consists of two (2) sections: a draft of your business plan and an income statement containing your business plan financials (i.e. Week 7 Discussion “The Financials”). Note: You must submit both sections as separate files for the completion of this assignment.

You must intend to raise money for your startup company. You can start with money from friends and family but at some point you will need funds from outside investors, either angels or venture capitalists, depending on how much money you project you will need to raise. Another possible angle is to develop money through crowdfunding, assuming your product meets the demand of such audiences.

Before you can raise money, you must develop a business plan that convinces an investor that your company will succeed.

Section 1: Business Plan (MS Word or equivalent)

Read Chapters 18 and 19 of the course text: Successful Business Plan. Use the Plan Preparation Forms at the end of each chapter of Successful Business Plan as a rough guide.

Write an approximately fifteen to twenty (15-20) page draft of your business plan in which you:

Revise the components of the following previously submitted sections based on the feedback you have received. Company Description (Assignment 1) Industry Analysis and Trends (Assignment 1) Strategic Position & Risk Assessment (Assignment 1) Target Market (Assignment 2) Competition (Assignment 2) Marketing Plan & Sales Strategy (Assignment 2) Create an Ethics & Social Responsibility Plan. Note: The Ethics & Social Responsibility plan should account for approximately three to five (3-5) pages of the Business Plan Draft.

Describe the ways in which your company is committed to being a good corporate citizen. Hints: Consider the following areas: Creating jobs Following the laws of every jurisdiction in which your company operates Fair and honest treatment of employees Non-discrimination of employees and increasing diversity of your work force Hints: If your company is designed as a social venture—in which you have a primary purpose of achieving a social or environmental goal—describe what that goal is and what aspects of your company are designed to reach that goal. Provide a rationale for why you have or why you have not chosen this to be a social venture. Discuss how your company’s activities will affect the environment and identify the steps you will take to mitigate any negative impacts. Hints: As a beverage company, consider such issues as your choice of packaging, disposal of bottles / packages by consumers, and your use of resources, such as water in areas where water may be scarce. Determine any health issues / claims related to the product you are making, whether negative or positive. Suggest the strategy your company will use to mitigate any negative issues, and to ensure any positive claims are true. Many beverage products have negative health impacts on certain segments of a population (e.g., children, pregnant mothers, etc.). Suggest your company’s plan, through advertising, distribution, and / or other methods, to target and reach only appropriate market segments. Format your assignment according to these formatting requirements: Cite the resources you have used to complete the exercise. Note: There is no minimum requirement for the number of resources used in the exercise. Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length. Section 2: Business Plan Financials (MS Excel worksheets template)

For year one, revise and submit the Income Statement, Cash Flow Projections, and Balance Sheet sections from the “Business Plan Financials” MS Excel template (see: Course Required Files in Week 1). The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

Describe strategic planning techniques used to formulate alternative strategies designed to achieve stated business goals. Create a plan to implement a firm’s strategy and manage the change from current operations. Analyze strategies for exerting the internal leadership needed to drive the implementation of strategic initiatives and improve operating excellence. Use technology and information resources to research issues in strategic management. Write clearly and concisely about strategic management using proper writing mechanics.

At professional conferences, blocks of time may be set aside for what are termed “poster sessions.

Application 1 — Analysis and Synthesis of Prior Research

At professional conferences, blocks of time may be set aside for what are termed “poster sessions.” A hotel ballroom or large open area will be ringed with individuals who use displays such as posters or electronic presentations displayed via projectors. These sessions provide an opportunity to share one’s research in an intimate setting with a small group gathered around who share a similar interest. The seminar format of this course is very similar to this academic exchange. During one set of paired weeks, you will be appointed as a Group Leader. If you are one of the Group Leaders for this week, you are to prepare an academic presentation, much like a poster session.

Your presentation should offer analysis and synthesis of prior research and will begin the interaction with your colleagues. You will prepare an academic paper of 5–7 pages in APA format, as well as a PowerPoint presentation of 7–10 slides. This analysis will be an open-ended introduction to explaining how alternatives to conventional finance theories can be modeled and implemented for financial analysis and planning. Your goal as the presenter should be to persuade your discussants that the approach(es) you have analyzed and synthesized are a sound means for challenging conventional finance theories. You should acknowledge that there are other models or means to study financial analysis and planning, but you should strive to be as persuasive as possible that the specific concepts and operationalizations you have reviewed are exciting research avenues. In addition, you should depict that they are potentially breakthrough areas in understanding how alternatives to conventional finance theories can be modeled and implemented to contribute to organizational effectiveness and the wealth maximization of shareholders.

Your paper and presentation should contain the following elements:

An incorporation and analysis of at least five of the Required Resources from this pair of weeks

The incorporation and analysis of five additional resources from the Walden Library

An identification of principal schools of thought, tendencies in the academic literature, or commonalities that define the academic scholarship regarding your topic

An evaluation of the main concepts with a focus on their application to management practice and their impact on positive social change

Direct evidence of addressing the Learning Outcomes from this pair of weeks

In addition to the above elements, the Group Leader(s) for this week will focus thematically on:

Differentiating between economic value added (EVA) and accounting net income as measures of performance

Articulating the effect of EVA on a company’s market value and shareholders’ wealth

Reviewing the literature to articulate ways of discovering earnings management, as well as focusing on models of earnings management related to companies’ financial statements

Selecting an aspect of earnings management and evaluating the ethical implications for practicing managers

Providing examples of how Fortune 500 financial managers apply EVA in the modeling of their profit targets

When encountered, the number of pages required for a student paper or report does not include the reference pages. For example, if an 8 page paper is requested, that is before the reference page(s) are added. .

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

ATTACHED IS THE POLICY MEMORNDOM TEMPLATE FOR THE ASSIGNMENT.

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Chapter 1 in the Martin (2015) text and Chapter 1 in the Steiner (2015) text, and access and review the required websites. Also, please consult Krasner et al (2009), which includes a collection of perspectives by prominent authors on the distinctions between policy writing and academic writing within the context of security issues. It will assist in your preparation of the interactive memorandum assignment across Week One and Week Two.

For this assignment, you will take on the role of an employee at a federal agency. Select one of the following agencies:

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Your immediate supervisor has requested a memorandum from you that identifies a current issue in homeland security through the lens of scholarly research. In addition, your supervisor has directed you to review research summaries completed by your co-workers (other students) and to propose new research questions that are based on the summaries of scholarly findings. The article that you select does not need to pertain directly to your chosen agency (although it may), but you will need to explain how it is relevant to your chosen agency. Your supervisor has indicated that you must interact with your hypothetical co-workers as below indicated.

You may select a scholarly journal article from the recommended resources list. Alternatively, you may research and select a scholarly journal article, utilizing the Ashford University Library.

The expectation is that you are able to analyze not only the import or findings associated with a given article, but are able to also understand the mechanisms employed by the author to facilitate the findings. The memorandum consists of five article summary elements, and two interactive elements. The elements are allocated across Week One and Week Two. You must use the provided Policy Memorandum Template.

Re-read the literature review section within your chosen article. The following elements must be addressed in Part One of your memorandum:

Add your chosen agency in the header section of the template where indicated. Double click on the placeholder “Add Federal Agency Name Here” to access the header. To exit the header section, double click anywhere in the body of the document. Complete the following: “To,” “From,” “CC,” and “Date.” Provide a title in the “Subject” line that briefly reflects your main point. Introduction: This first section explains the context of the issue or message and also sets the tone. Similar to an abstract in a longer written paper, the first paragraph should give an overview that includes a brief explanation of the topic of concern and a forecast of what is to come. Include the author and title of the chosen article in an in-text citation. Literature Review: Summarize the literature review section within the article. Please consult Literature Review samples through the Ashford University Writing Center. Explain how the literature review section of the article contributes to an understanding of responsibilities and functions across agencies at various jurisdictional levels that mitigate hostilities, threats, hazards, and consequences. Research Objective: Explain how and to what extent the author’s research objective contributes to an understanding of the responsibilities and functions across agencies at various jurisdictional levels that mitigate hostilities, threats, hazards, and consequences. The research objective represents the author’s central purpose in writing the article. It is typically understood as the attempt by the author to explore research questions through research methods. Theory: Identify the theoretical basis for the research objective(s) and explain whether the author uses a deductive or inductive approach. As indicated by Weida and Stolley (2013), within material available through the Purdue Owl website, in deductive work, researchers typically justify their research questions by identifying an underlying theoretical basis that would support the research question. In inductive work, researchers look at observations to generate a theory. To further your understanding on the difference between deductive and inductive approaches, you may wish to consult other scholarly sources, along with the above referenced Purdue Owl website for additional information. Gerring (2004) indicates that researchers may seek to discern or to identify factors associated with causation, and in other contexts, may seek to corroborate an existing proposition on causation. Reference: At the end of the memorandum template, include a full citation of your chosen article.

the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission

Visit the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission website. Click on “Recalls.” Choose one product that has been recalled. Describe the product subject to recall, including the recall date, recall number, and the reason for the recall. Analyze whether the manufacturer would be liable for negligence if the product had not been recalled and had caused harm to a consumer. Discusses the following in relation to the product recall: Duty of Care Standard of Care Breach of the Duty of Care Actual Causation Proximate Causation Actual Injury Defenses to Negligence Analyze and apply a relevant consumer protection statute identified under “Consumer Protection” in Chapter 8 of your text in conjunction with the product recall that you have identified. Must address the topic with critical thought. Submit a four- to five-page paper (not including title and reference pages). Your paper must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide and must cite at least three scholarly sources in addition to the textbook

1. The failure to recall the product is only part of the analysis. The duty of the manufacturer extends beyond recalling defective products. In particular, the manufacturer of a product has a duty to act with reasonable care to produce a product that is safe for consumers. When you write your paper, the analysis should not only discuss the failure to recall the product, the analysis should also discuss the fact that the manufacturer produced a defective product.

2. Assume that the product was not recalled. Students have lost points in the past because they determined that since the manufacturer recalled the product, they were not liable.

3. Assume that the product injured a consumer. Students have lost points in the past for determining that the manufacturer was not liable since it was recalled before any injuries were reported.

4. Assume that the product was not recalled and use the elements of a negligent tort to analyze whether the manufacturer would be liable for negligence if a consumer was harmed by the product. This is the main part of the assignment. Be sure to discuss the duty of care, standard of care, breach of the duty of care, actual causation, proximate causation, actual injury, and defenses to negligence. What did the manufacturer have a duty to do or not do? Did they breach that duty? If so, how did they breach that duty? Did that breach of the duty of care case an injury? Was it foreseeable that the breach of the duty of care would cause an injury? What defenses are there to negligence?

Again, the recall and the reports of a defective product is only part of the analysis. The manufacturer’s duty begins long before there are reports of an injury due to the product. It begins when they manufacture the product. You can find more information about the elements of negligence in Chapter 8 of the textbook.

It begins when they manufacture the product. You can find more information about the elements of negligence in Chapter 8 of the textbook.

5. Write a good introductory paragraph. Your introduction should include a thesis statement such as “The manufacturer of the Versailles and Lourdes model high heel shoes would be liable in negligence if the products had not been recalled and had caused harm to the consumer.” This is a good thesis statement because it states your position. Then, give short preview or summary of what the paper will discuss such as “This essay will first identify a product subject to a recall by the Consumer Product Safety Division. It will then discuss the elements of negligence including the concepts of duty of care, standard of care, breach of the duty of care, actual causation, proximate causation, actual injury, and defenses to negligence. Finally, it will apply these concepts to the recalled product to conclude that the manufacturer would be liable in negligence if the product had not been recalled and caused harm to a consumer.”

6. Write a good conclusion. Your conclusion should be similar (but not exactly the same) as your introduction. Restate the thesis and summarize the main points covered in the essay. The conclusion is only supposed to be a summary of your essay. Be sure to do the analysis and reach your determination in the body of your essay. Do no wait until the conclusion to make your determination or to introduce a new point.

interpersonal effectiveness, competence, emotional intelligence, mindfulness and ethics.

1.Consider the four components of interpersonal effectiveness, competence, emotional intelligence, mindfulness and ethics. Think about how you are doing in each of these components. How does your friend/partner think you are doing on each of these components? Where are you doing well? Where do you need some practice? Consider the results from your Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment in Module 1. How accurate were the results? What did you learn about yourself from the self-assessment? (Please write at least 1 page for this section.) 2. How do each of these tenets of interpersonal communication affect you in the following areas: (Please write at least ½ page for these.) Personally? Academically? Professionally? 3. Summarize two key insights from this assignment. What do you know now about your behavior and interpersonal effectiveness that you didn’t know before? (Please write at least ½ page for this.) 4.Looking back at the goals that you set for yourself, what new behaviors can you practice that will help you reach them? Explain. (Please write at least ½ page for this.)
